Ep 9. Young Girl

Everyone loves Raymond is a classic sitcom featuring the Barone family and their daily shenanigans. Episode 9 of season 5 is titled Young Girl. The episode opens with Ray and Debra excited about Robert, Ray's older brother, dating a woman much younger than him, Amy McDougall. Amy is only 21 while Robert is in his late 30s.

Despite the obvious age gap, Robert is smitten with Amy, and the feeling seems to be mutual. The Barone family is excited to see Robert so happy, except, of course, Marie, the overbearing and overprotective mother who thinks Robert's new relationship is wrong. Debra, on the other hand, is worried about Robert's dating a younger woman and thinks he's going through a mid-life crisis.

Robert and Amy are putting their relationship on the fast track by already making plans to move in together. However, when Robert introduces Amy to his family, things take a turn for the worse. Everyone gets a glimpse of Amy's personality, which leads to some awkward moments.

During dinner, Ray and Debra cannot help but notice that Amy is behaving like a child. She is playing with her food and acting immaturely, which Debra thinks confirms her suspicions of Robert's mid-life crisis. Marie is sitting at the end of the table seething with anger, watching as Amy is manically smiling ear to ear and sucking sauce off her fingers.

Marie doesn't like Amy's behavior one bit, and she finally breaks her silence, asking her to "tie her napkin around her neck like a lady." Robert, who is oblivious to his mother's disapproval, goes into defensive mode, insisting that Amy is just "young and carefree."

While Robert is defending Amy, Debra takes a different approach. She pulls Amy aside and tries to talk to her like an adult. Amy reveals that her parents are wealthy and that she's used to being pampered and taken care of. Debra tries to warn her that Robert is different from what she's used to and that their relationship might not be sustainable.

Meanwhile, Marie is still fuming and ranting about how young Amy is and how she's not right for Robert. Frank, Robert's father, tries to be reasonable and reminds Marie how she married Frank at the age of 19.

The episode concludes with Ray and Debra trying to convince Robert to slow down and take things easy with Amy. They warn him that he might be setting himself up for heartbreak if he doesn't take things slow. However, Robert is head over heels and doesn't want to hear any of it. The episode ends with Robert moving into his new apartment with Amy, leaving everyone wondering how their relationship will turn out.
