Ray is a sports writer and his brother Robert is a policeman. They both have been living near their parents house for a long time. In this episode, Ray and Debra are invited to have dinner with Ray's parents. Ray's mother, Marie, is very excited about an article that she found in a magazine. This article is about a woman who has turned her life around and become a successful businesswoman. Marie is very impressed by this woman's story and she wants to share it with everyone.
During the dinner, Marie talks about this woman and her story. However, she doesn't want to reveal the woman's name and tells Ray's family to call her "Mom" instead. Ray and Debra are not very interested in the story and they are trying to find an excuse to leave. However, Marie is very insistent and she keeps talking about the woman's life.
Robert, who is also at the dinner, becomes intrigued by the story and starts asking questions. Marie tells Robert that "Mom" is a strong and independent woman who has overcome a lot of obstacles in her life. This conversation makes Robert very curious about "Mom" and he starts investigating to find out who she really is.
The next day, Robert goes to the magazine office to find out who "Mom" is. However, he finds out that the woman in the article is actually Marie. Robert is very surprised by this discovery, especially since he never thought of Marie as a successful and independent person. He decides to keep the secret and not tell anyone in the family.
As Robert is struggling to keep the secret, he accidentally reveals the truth to Ray. Ray is shocked and confused by this revelation, especially since Marie has always been dependent on her family. Ray feels that Marie has never really trusted her family and chose to share her success with strangers instead.
Ray decides to confront Marie about this issue and they have a heart-to-heart conversation. Marie admits that she had always dreamed of becoming successful, but felt that her family didn't support her. She also reveals that she wanted to share her success with strangers to get recognition and validation.
In the end, Marie realizes that her family is the most important thing in her life and she should have trusted them more. She apologizes to Ray and the rest of the family for keeping the secret and promises to share her success with them in the future.
This episode is a touching portrayal of the complexities of family relationships and the importance of trust and honesty. It also shows how a person's desire for recognition and validation can sometimes blind them to the love and support of their family. The performances by the cast, especially Doris Roberts (who plays Marie), are outstanding and truly capture the emotions of the characters. Overall, 'Call Me Mom' is a must-watch episode for fans of Everybody Loves Raymond.
