In season 7 episode 3 of Finding Your Roots, titled "No Irish Need Apply," host Henry Louis Gates Jr. delves into the ancestry of three famous Americans with Irish heritage: journalist Gayle King, comedian Jim Gaffigan, and politician Katie Couric.

As Gates uncovers the roots of each guest, he explores the history of Irish immigration to the United States in the 19th and early 20th centuries. He explains that during this time, the Irish faced considerable discrimination and even violence, with signs reading "No Irish Need Apply" appearing in job postings and apartment listings.

First up is Gayle King, who grew up believing she was part Cherokee due to family lore. Gates reveals that while King does have some Native American heritage, the bulk of her ancestry is actually Irish. As he traces her family tree back several generations, he uncovers a heartbreaking story of King's great-great-grandmother, who was raised in an Irish workhouse and immigrated to America with her young child, only to die in childbirth shortly after arriving.

Next, Gates explores Jim Gaffigan's roots, uncovering the surprising story of his Irish great-grandfather, who was a member of the Royal Irish Constabulary during the Irish War of Independence. Gaffigan, who admits to not knowing much about his family history beyond his grandparents, is moved by the revelation of his ancestor's involvement in such a pivotal moment in Irish history.

Finally, Gates delves into the ancestry of Katie Couric, whose father was of Irish descent. As he digs deeper, he uncovers an unexpected connection to a famous Irish patriot who fought against British rule in the years leading up to the Irish Rebellion of 1798. Couric is clearly moved by the revelation of this heroic chapter in her family's history.

Throughout the episode, Gates weaves in the broader history of Irish immigration to America, discussing the poverty, prejudice, and violence that many Irish immigrants faced. He also highlights the ways in which Irish culture has influenced American society, from St. Patrick's Day celebrations to the rise of Irish-American politicians.

"No Irish Need Apply" is a fascinating exploration of the ways in which DNA testing and genealogy research can shed light on our personal histories and the larger cultural legacies that shape who we are today.
