Mama Flora's Family is a television mini-series that aired in 1998 based on a novel by Alex Haley. It starred Cecily Tyson. The show depicted the life and struggles of Flora Palmer during the 1920s through the 1990s. She began her life young life as the daughter or poor sharecroppers in Mississippi. She was later under the employment of rich socialite Lincoln Flemming, caring for his elderly grandmother. She later becomes pregnant after becoming romantically involved with Lincoln, is shunned by his family, and later is forced to allow them to raise son Luke. She later marries Booker Palmer, a sharecropper. She is later widowed and raises their son Willie, and niece Ruthanne alone, after Booker is killed stealing cotton in the 1930s. The mini-series also depicts the lives of Willie and Ruthanne as they grow and become adults, with Willie moving to Chicago, where Flora's father lives. He eventually joined the army and returns to marry his girlfriend and start a family. Ruthanne attends Fisk University, after receiving a scholarship, and Flora begins looking for her son Luke to reunite with him. Luke has recently graduated from law school and is in the process of joining the army. He later opens a practice in Harlem.
