Forensic Files season 7 episode 38, "The Sniffing Revenge," follows the investigation of a brutal murder in a small town in South Carolina. The victim, a retired schoolteacher named Sophie Barrera, was found dead in her home by her daughter. She had been stabbed repeatedly and her throat had been slit.

The investigation begins with the local police department collecting evidence at the crime scene, including bloody footprints on the carpet and a bottle of wine that had been opened but not consumed. The police also discover that Sophie's dog, a Dachshund named Duke, was missing from the house.

Forensic scientist Dr. Henry Lee is called in to help with the investigation. He examines the bloody footprints and determines that they were made by a size 11.5 shoe. He also analyses the wine bottle and discovers saliva on the edge of the bottle. DNA testing of the saliva reveals that it belongs to a man named Robert Truesdale.

Robert Truesdale had recently been released from prison after serving time for a burglary that he had committed in the same town. He had a history of drug abuse and was known to be a violent individual. When the police track him down, they find him living in a motel room with his girlfriend and Duke, Sophie's missing dog. Truesdale denies any involvement in the murder, but the police arrest him for possession of stolen property.

Dr. Lee continues his forensic investigation, examining a towel that was found in Sophie's bathroom. He discovers that there is a long, blonde hair on the towel that does not belong to Sophie. DNA testing of the hair reveals that it belongs to Truesdale's girlfriend.

As the investigation continues, the police learn that Sophie had a history with Truesdale. She had once caught him trying to steal from her home, and had reported him to the police. Truesdale was sent to prison as a result of Sophie's testimony, and he had vowed revenge.

The police are able to match Truesdale's shoe size to the footprints found at Sophie's home. They also discover that Truesdale had been in possession of a knife that had the same type of serrated blade that was used to kill Sophie.

Robert Truesdale is ultimately convicted of first-degree murder and is sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The case is closed, and Sophie's family can finally begin to heal.

"The Sniffing Revenge" is a gripping episode of Forensic Files that demonstrates the importance of forensic evidence in solving crimes. Through the use of DNA testing, shoeprint analysis, and other forensic techniques, investigators were able to put together a compelling case against Truesdale. The episode also highlights the devastating impact that violent crime can have on a small community.
