Lindsay begrudgingly returns to school after being out sick for several days and is dismayed to find out that she has been assigned a new P.E. class. Frustrated with her situation, she is pleasantly surprised when she meets her new gym teacher, Coach Fredricks. Though he is a strict disciplinarian, he is also a caring and understanding teacher who takes his job seriously. Meanwhile, Sam is forced to deal with the death of his dog and enlists the help of his friends to give him a proper funeral. As they struggle to find the ideal burial spot, Sam reflects on his relationship with his beloved pet and tries to come to terms with his grief. As all of this is going on, Nick is struggling with his breakup with Lindsay and finds solace in a new interest - drumming. He begins practicing obsessively but lacks the natural talent to make it in his high school's drumline. Meanwhile, Daniel has his sights set on becoming the new drummer for the band who perform at the school's football games, but must first beat out the current drummer who is a senior and a formidable opponent. In the end, Lindsay and Coach Fredricks find common ground and Sam and his friends successfully lay his dog to rest. As for Nick and Daniel, their respective drumming pursuits come to a head in a high-stakes drum-off that leaves them both humbled and energized to keep practicing. Throughout the episode, the characters are forced to confront some tough realities about growing up, loss, and the difficulty of achieving your dreams, all while maintaining their individual personalities and senses of humor.
