Freaks and Geeks is an innovative comedy that has a rabid cult following. The show produced 18 episodes and was created by Paul Feig. Judd Apatow co-produced the show which also had strong dramatic elements. The show was set during the early 1980s' in Northern Michigan. Freaks and Geeks followed a group of high school students. The central characters were the Weir family. The two offspring of Harold and Jean Weir are high school Junior Lindsey and her little brother, freshman Sam. Lindsey is a straight A student who is feeling disenchanted with being known only as brain. She is attracted to the group of freaks who were considered the rough element at the school. She tries to branch out and befriend the group of loaners including school bad boy, Daniel Desario, and his wild girlfriend, Kim Kelly. Among other weighty issues that confronted Lindsey and her friends had to deal with were teen drug use, drinking, promiscuity, cheating and parental infidelity. Freshman, Sam, hangs out with his longtime friends, Bill Haverchuck and Neal Schweiber. Sam and his friends are considered the geeks of the high school and have to deal with issues such as bullying, gym class, peer pressure and unrequited love for cheerleaders. The show featured a cast of future star comedy actors including James Franco, Jason Segal, Seth Rogen, Linda Cardellini, Busy Phillips, Martin Starr, Samm Levine and John Frances Dailey. Several recognizable actors, who would often be used in Apatow's films, also appeared including Leslie Mann, Ben Stiller, Shia Lebouf, Rashida Jones and David Koechner. Freaks and Geeks received great critical reviews. It was named one of the 100 greatest TV shows of all time by Time Magazine and was listed as one of TV Guide's best cult TV shows. TV Guide also named the show one of the 60 greatest drama shows of all time. The show also was popular for its soundtrack which featured a who's who of 1970s' rock and roll's heavyweights such as The Who, Styx, Billy Joel, The Grateful Dead, Van Halen and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts.
