Haruka encounters a new swim team while the Iwatobi Swim Club is rebuilding their school's swimming pool. Makoto, Nagisa, and Gou are assisting Haruka with recruiting new members while Rei is away at cram school. Gou suggests making flyers to advertise the swim club, but Haruka doesn't think it will help. As they're walking in town, Haruka sees a swim team, Samezuka Academy, practicing intensely in their swimwear. Haruka stops to watch with Makoto, and they get into a staring contest with Samezuka Academy's captain, Rin Matsuoka.

After returning to their own pool, Haruka and Makoto are surprised to find that Samezuka Academy will be training at their school. Rin has transferred into Iwatobi High School and joins the Samezuka team. The next day, Haruka visits Samezuka's practice and is introduced to the team's other members, including Rin's childhood friend, Sousuke Yamazaki, and team captain, Seijuro Mikoshiba. Rin challenges Haruka to a 100-meter freestyle race. If Haruka wins, Rin promises to quit swimming, but if Rin wins, Haruka has to quit swimming. Haruka accepts the challenge.
