Ed and Al arrive in a town where they hear about two men claiming to be the real Elric brothers. After investigating, they find that the two imposters are con artists who have been using alchemy to deceive people into thinking they are the famous State Alchemists.
The brothers confront the imposters and learn that they have a tragic story of their own. The two men, Russell and Fletcher Tringham, are the sons of an alchemist who had been disgraced by the State Alchemists and committed suicide. In an effort to seek revenge and restore their family's honor, Russell and Fletcher have been using their father's research to mimic the Elric brothers' appearance and abilities.
As the real Elrics begin to sympathize with the Tringham brothers, they also begin to question the justness of the State Alchemists. They learn that the alchemists are not infallible, and that their actions can have real consequences for innocent people.
Meanwhile, a mysterious figure begins to take notice of the Elrics' activities, and it becomes clear that there are those who are willing to do whatever it takes to maintain the status quo.
The episode ends with Ed and Al setting off to uncover the truth behind the State Alchemists and search for a way to restore their own bodies.
