In season 1 episode 3 of Ghost Lab, titled "Smell of Fear," the team investigates the haunting of a museum in Austin, Texas. The museum is home to the infamous Servant Girl Annihilator, a serial killer who terrorized the city in the late 1800s. The team is tasked with determining if the killer's spirit is still present in the museum and if it's responsible for the eerie occurrences reported by staff and visitors.
As they begin their investigation, they quickly realize that the museum's basement is where all the activity seems to be centered. The team splits up, with one group heading to the basement and the other investigating the main exhibit area.
In the basement, the team uses various equipment to try and detect any paranormal activity. They set up a laser grid to detect movement and a thermal imaging camera to detect temperature changes. They also use a device called an EVP recorder, which can pick up on sounds that aren't audible to the human ear.
Meanwhile, the other group starts to notice strange smells in the main exhibit area. It's described as a pungent, rotting smell that seems to come and go in waves. The team realizes that this type of smell is often associated with paranormal activity, so they start to investigate further.
As the investigation continues, the team has several encounters with unexplained phenomena. One team member reports feeling a cold draft even though there are no windows or doors nearby. Another team member hears what sounds like footsteps coming from an empty hallway.
The team also captures several recordings on their EVP device that seem to suggest the presence of a spirit. One recording is a faint whisper that says "I'm here." Another recording captures what appears to be the voice of a woman singing.
Despite all the evidence they collect, the team isn't quite sure if the Servant Girl Annihilator's spirit is present in the museum. They decide to enlist the help of a psychic medium to get a better sense of what's going on.
The medium spends some time in the museum and does indeed pick up on a strong presence that she believes is the spirit of the killer. She also senses the presence of several other spirits who may have been victims of the Servant Girl Annihilator.
With this information, the team decides to conduct a final investigation to try and communicate with the spirits. They hold a seance in the basement and use various devices to try and communicate.
As the seance progresses, the team starts to get some very clear responses from the spirits. They confirm that the Servant Girl Annihilator is indeed present and that he's been responsible for the strange occurrences in the museum.
The team is able to get some closure for the victims and the spirits seem to become more peaceful as a result. The team concludes that the museum is indeed haunted, and they've uncovered some fascinating information about one of America's most notorious serial killers.
