Hannah's ex-boyfriend, Elijah, suddenly returns to New York after a stint away in Iowa pursuing his own career dreams. Elijah surprises Hannah with a visit, immediately throwing her into a tailspin. She is unsure of how to react to Elijah's return and feels conflicted about her own feelings towards him.
Meanwhile, Jessa is on a mission to find some vices by hitting up different bars and clubs around the city with her coworker, Thomas-John. They end up getting into some trouble together, but Jessa is undeterred. She continues to push the boundaries of her own personal experience, even if it means putting herself in dangerous situations.
Marnie, on the other hand, is still struggling to find her footing in her post-Charlie life. She is frustrated with her job and with her non-existent love life, and is desperate for some attention. She starts to explore some new avenues of her own, including a potential career change and a new romantic interest.
Throughout the episode, the different characters struggle with their own identities and their relationships with each other. Hannah is forced to confront her feelings for Elijah, while Marnie tries to figure out what she really wants in life. Meanwhile, Jessa's recklessness puts her in danger, and she is forced to confront the consequences of her actions.
Overall, "The Return" is a tense and emotional episode that challenges the characters and their relationships in new and unexpected ways. It is a pivotal moment in the first season of Girls, setting the stage for future plot developments and character arcs.
