Ep 5. Taking Care of Business

Three suburban mothers, Beth, Annie, and Ruby, find themselves in increasingly dire financial straits. Desperate for money, they come up with a desperate plan to rob a grocery store. But when things go wrong and they end up with a shopping cart full of cash, they find themselves in way over their heads.

In episode 5 of Good Girls, entitled "Taking Care of Business," the trio of amateur thieves tries to figure out how to launder their ill-gotten gains without drawing any attention to themselves. Meanwhile, Beth's husband, Dean, is still trying to get back in her good graces after his cheating and drug dealing almost got her arrested. But when he discovers the money stash, it becomes clear that the women's secret won't stay hidden for long.

As usual, the show's standout performances come from its three leading ladies. Christina Hendricks shines as Ruby, a harried mother of two who's struggling to keep her sick daughter's medical bills paid. Retta is hilarious as Annie, whose plan to seduce a security guard to get their stolen money back goes hilariously awry. And Mae Whitman continues to impress as Beth, whose increasing confidence in her ability to be a criminal mastermind is both exhilarating and terrifying.

But the show's secret weapon is its strong supporting cast. Matthew Lillard is fantastic as Dean, trying desperately to make amends for his past mistakes. Reno Wilson is charming as Ruby's loving husband, Stan, who's just as caught up in the criminal hijinks as his wife is. And Manny Montana steals every scene he's in as Rio, the dangerous gangster who helped the women pull off the heist.

"Taking Care of Business" is a pivotal episode for the series, as the women begin to realize just how deep they've dug themselves into a hole. But despite the danger and high stakes, the show never loses its sense of humor or heart. Smart, funny, and thrilling, Good Girls is rapidly becoming one of the most enjoyable shows on TV.
