In this episode of Grand Designs, viewers are introduced to a unique build concept - a floating house on the River Thames. Host Kevin McCloud meets a couple who are taking on the challenge of creating a home on an old barge in London.

The owners have a passion for boating and wanted a home that would allow them to be even closer to the water. They purchased an old Dutch barge from the 1920s with the plan to convert it into a modern and luxurious home. They bring in architect Ian Price to help with the design and construction of the new floating abode.

One of the biggest challenges they face is the size and shape of the barge. They need to transform the narrow and long ship into a comfortable living space complete with a kitchen, bedrooms, and bathrooms. They also want to keep much of the original features of the ship intact, including the wooden hull and external structure.

The team starts by stripping the barge down to its base and carefully insulating it to make sure it is warm and cozy for the winter months. They install a custom-made steel frame to support the new interior and begin work on creating a unique open-plan living space that maximizes natural light and the stunning views of the river.

As the project progresses, unexpected challenges arise, including repairs to the old engine and a more in-depth refurbishment of the boat's hull. The owners also face hurdles with the city council, who initially reject their planning requests due to concerns about the barge being a potential environmental hazard.

Despite these setbacks, the team pushes on, and gradually, the floating home takes shape. One of the most intriguing aspects of the build is how the designers have kept many of the original features while adding modern touches. The old steering platform is transformed into a balcony area with large glass doors and a steel-framed roof. This new structure is designed to slide back, revealing an outdoor seating area, allowing the owners to enjoy the river in all weathers.

Viewers get to see the innovative ways the designers have maximized space and light in such a small area. The kitchen is expertly designed to include all the modern appliances and space-saving solutions, and the living area is open plan but carefully zoned, with areas for dining, entertainment, and relaxation. The bedrooms are brilliantly designed with bespoke wardrobes and clever storage solutions that make the most of the unique shape of the barge.

As the project comes to an end, McCloud catches up with the owners to see if they are happy with the results. The couple is thrilled with their new home and excited to start their new life on the river. They talk about the challenges they faced in the renovation and how working with the designers and builders helped them navigate those obstacles.

Overall, this episode of Grand Designs is a fascinating glimpse into the world of floating homes on the River Thames. The build is a testament to the skill and ingenuity of the designers, builders, and owners, who have managed to turn an old barge into a stunning and unique home.
