Series 7 Episode 6 of the popular British TV show Grand Designs features a couple named Steve and Elaine Grimwood who have decided to build their dream home in the heart of the Norfolk Broads. Steve, who is a boatbuilder, has always wanted to live by the water, and Elaine, who is a keen gardener, wants to have a home that blends in with the landscape and has plenty of outdoor space.
The couple comes up with a unique design concept where the house is partially built into the hillside, with a grass roof that blends into the surrounding countryside. The house is split into two distinct sections, with the living areas and bedrooms on one side and a workshop for Steve's boatbuilding on the other.
Architect Dan Brill is drafted in to help bring their vision to life, and the Grimwoods give him a strict budget of £200,000 for the build. Brill's design takes inspiration from the local countryside and he comes up with a structure that is both modern and rustic, using materials such as weathered zinc cladding, larch timber and a unique curved roofing system.
However, from the start, there are challenges: a nearby high voltage power line makes construction difficult, and the deep layer of peat soil means that the foundations have to be dug down to nearly five meters. The couple also faces considerable setbacks in terms of planning permission, as local authorities are unaccustomed to the unconventional design of the house.
Despite the many challenges, the construction finally begins. Along the way, the Grimwoods also have to contend with Steve's health issues, which puts the timeline of the build on hold.
As the build progresses, the couple faces many obstacles, including a skyrocketing budget and unforeseen issues with the roof. They even have to resort to putting up a temporary shelter for Steve's boatbuilding business to allow him to continue working.
Throughout the construction process, host Kevin McCloud visits the site and even spends a night in the partially completed house to experience what it feels like to live in the unique space.
In the end, the couple manages to overcome the many hurdles and turn their dream home into a reality. The finished product is a stunning structure that sits harmoniously within the landscape, with natural light flooding into the living spaces and Steve's workshop a perfect reflection of his passion for boatbuilding.
