In 17th century England, a small group of Catholics plot to blow up the House of Lords and kill King James I in order to end the brutal persecution they face under his rule. Gunpowder is a tense and dramatic historical drama that tells the story of this infamous plot, known today as the Gunpowder Plot, and the men and women involved.

The show follows Robert Catesby, played by Kit Harington, a committed Catholic who is driven to take drastic action to protect his community from persecution. Despite the danger and violence that surrounds him, Catesby remains steadfast in his belief that he is doing what is right. Alongside him are other members of the plot, including the experienced fighter and loyal friend of Catesby, played by Peter Mullan.

The show does not shy away from the brutal nature of the times, and the violence that is depicted is often shocking and graphic, including scenes of torture and execution. However, the show also has moments of quiet reflection and emotional depth, allowing us to see the humanity behind the violence.

One of the standout performances of the show is Liv Tyler as Anne Vaux, a wealthy woman who becomes embroiled in the plot when her cousin becomes a key member. Tyler brings a quiet intensity to the role, conveying the inner turmoil of a woman torn between loyalty to her family and her conscience.

Mark Gatiss also shines in his portrayal of Robert Cecil, the king's spymaster who is tasked with uncovering the plot. Despite being on the opposite side of the conflict, Gatiss manages to make Cecil a compelling and complex character, balancing his loyalty to the king with his own personal desires and motivations.

Tom Cullen, David Bamber, and Edward Holcroft also deliver strong performances as other members of the plot, each bringing their own unique perspective and motivations to the story.

One of the most striking aspects of the show is its attention to detail and historical accuracy. From the costumes to the set design, everything feels authentic and true to the period. This attention to detail extends to the language used by the characters, which is sometimes difficult to understand but adds to the authenticity of the show.

Despite its historical setting, the themes explored in Gunpowder feel frighteningly relevant today. The show examines issues of religious intolerance, political corruption, and the ethics of violence in the name of a cause. It asks questions about what it means to stand up for what you believe in, and whether the ends can ever truly justify the means.

Overall, Gunpowder is a gripping and powerful drama that tells the story of a historical event with honesty and attention to detail. With strong performances from a talented cast and a compelling story, it is a show that will leave you thinking long after the final episode has ended.
