  • April 19, 2009

The Hallmark Hall of Fame season 58 episode 2 is titled "The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler." This episode tells the incredible true story of Irena Sendler (Anna Paquin), a Polish social worker who risked her life to save the lives of thousands of Jewish children during World War II.

Irena and her team of volunteers smuggled Jewish children out of the Warsaw Ghetto, often hiding them in bags, coffins, or even sewers to avoid detection. They then placed the children with Polish families or in convents, giving them false identities and hoping they would one day be reunited with their surviving family members.

Despite the danger, Irena continued her work, even when she was betrayed by a fellow volunteer and captured by the Gestapo. She was brutally interrogated and nearly executed, but she refused to reveal any information about the children she had saved, even when she was tortured.

After the war, Irena tried to reunite the children with their families, but many had been killed in the Holocaust. She therefore helped place the survivors in orphanages or with other families.

The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler is a powerful and inspiring tribute to a woman who risked everything to save others. The episode features a strong performance by Anna Paquin and is sure to leave viewers moved by Irena's bravery and sacrifice.
