Hand Maid May is a teen-comedy animated series featuring the adventures of a young man and the robot girl that lives with him. The story is a romantic comedy set in Japan. The main character is Kazuya Saotome, a student at Ochanomizu Industrial University. His first love is engineering, and his life-long dream is to build a functioning robot. Despite his lack of cash, he is a gentle person with a real love for his field. His life gets more complicated when his rival, the wealthy Kotaro Nanbara, gives him a program that secretly carries a virus in it. In a desperate attempt to get the virus off of his system, Kazuya accidentally ends up ordering a Cyberdoll, a human-shaped robot girl. May arrives quickly, and to Kazuya's surprise, she quickly becomes an integral part of his life. At the beginning of the series, May is a palm-sized robot girl. She is innocent and very sweet-natured, and despite her diminutive size, she is very good at cheering Makoto up and at making him see the bright side of things. She must be plugged into Kazuya's computer to charge, and she can control simple machines and traffic lights. The first part of the series focuses primarily on Kazuya's attempts to prevent May from being taken away because he does not have the money to pay for her, but by the second half of the story, May has received a full-grown body that makes her human-sized. There are also mysterious people peering in at Kazuya's life from the edges, and there are hints that his work will be far more influential in the field of robotics and artificial intelligence than he could ever have dreamed. Along the way, there are complications from Kazuya's rival, Kotaro, and also from other Cyberdolls that show up. This romantic comedy has a fun science-fiction twist, and it is available in both subtitled and dubbed formats.
