Happy! is an American television series based on the graphic novel of the same name by Grant Morrison and Darick Robertson. The show premiered on the Syfy network in December 2017 and consists of two seasons.
The first episode of season one, titled "Saint Nick," begins with an introduction to Nick Sax, a former police detective turned hitman. Nick's life has taken a downward spiral since leaving the force. He lives in a dingy apartment, drinks excessively, and engages in illicit activities to make a living. He is contacted by a former partner, Det. Merry, who is investigating a brutal murder. Merry believes that Nick is involved in the murder, which was of a member of a crime family, and wants to bring him in for questioning.
Meanwhile, a young girl named Hailey Hansen is abducted by a man dressed as Santa Claus. Hailey's mother, Amanda, turns to Det. Merry for help but is rebuffed. Amanda decides to take matters into her own hands and hires a hitman to find her daughter. The hitman in question is none other than Nick Sax himself.
As Nick investigates Hailey's disappearance, he is confronted by a group of gangsters who have been hired to kill him. A shootout ensues, and Nick barely manages to escape with his life. While on the run, Nick suffers a heart attack and is rushed to the hospital.
It is during Nick's hospitalization that he encounters an imaginary friend named Happy. Happy is a tiny, blue unicorn who is on a mission to find Hailey and bring her home to her mother. Happy is convinced that Nick is the key to finding Hailey and enlists his help.
Nick is skeptical of Happy at first, believing him to be a hallucination brought on by his medication. However, Happy is persistent, and Nick eventually agrees to help him. Together, they set out to track down Hailey and bring her back home.
"Saint Nick" sets the stage for a dark and twisted journey through the seedy underbelly of New York City. The show's unique blend of gritty crime drama and whimsical fantasy is both entertaining and jarring. Christopher Meloni delivers an exceptional performance as Nick Sax, and Patton Oswalt brings Happy to life in a way that is both hilarious and endearing.
Overall, "Saint Nick" is a promising start to the series. It introduces the main characters and sets up the overarching plot of the season while managing to be both humorous and suspenseful. Fans of dark comedies and crime dramas will find much to enjoy in Happy!
