Season 4 of Hawaii Five-0 continued with an action-packed adventure in the episode "A'ale Ma'a Wau (Fish Out of Water)." The episode revolved around the team's investigation into the murder of a young woman, whose body was found in the ocean off a secluded beach. Soon, they find themselves navigating international waters and working alongside an Interpol agent to uncover a complex web of deceit and greed.

As the episode opens, Steve McGarrett (Alex O'Loughlin) is out on a surfing excursion with his girlfriend Catherine Rollins (Michelle Borth), their serene morning interrupted by the discovery of a dead body. Once the team is called in, they discover that the victim was not only shot but also tossed into the ocean after being tied up with fishing line. Heading to the victim's house, they find a DVD containing a recording of her and a man, whom they soon identify as a notorious con artist named Jeremy Bauer (Mark Dacascos).

Despite Bauer being wanted by Interpol, the team learns that he has managed to slip into Hawaii without their knowledge. In order to investigate further, they enlist the help of his former associate and ex-Interpol agent, Mia Adams (Michelle Krusiec), who proves to be a valuable resource during the investigation. As the team tries to find Bauer, they uncover a sordid history of scams and frauds involving various high-end clients that the con artist had worked with in the past.

Meanwhile, with the help of Kamekona (Taylor Wily), Chin Ho Kelly (Daniel Dae Kim) and Kono Kalakaua (Grace Park) are busy tracking down a group of thieves who had been robbing luxury beach homes. It soon becomes clear that their efforts are connected to Bauer, as they find evidence of his involvement in the theft ring. Mia, who is working undercover with the thieves, gets some critical information about Bauer's plan to steal a valuable painting.

As the team rushes to put together a plan to intercept Bauer and his accomplices, they are forced to improvise on the fly when they learn that the painting is set to be auctioned off on a yacht, currently in international waters. The team devises a daring plan that involves dropping in on the yacht from the air, with Kono and Mia posing as thieves intending to steal the painting.
