In "Into the Badlands" season 3 episode 1, titled "Enter the Phoenix," we find Sunny (Daniel Wu) held captive in a mining prison. He's been there for six months, and his captors have cut his powers by half to keep him subdued. But Sunny is nothing if not resourceful, and he's been biding his time working on his escape.
Meanwhile, in the Badlands, a new character is introduced - Pilgrim (Babou Ceesay), a religious zealot who has been searching for a legendary city that's rumored to hold untold powers. His followers are loyal and deadly, and the Baron Chau (Eleanor Matsuura) has taken notice. She sees an opportunity to strike a deal with Pilgrim, but her plans may be undone by a mysterious figure who's been following them both.
Elsewhere, we catch up with Bajie (Nick Frost) and his new companion, a young girl named Ava (Ella-Rae Smith). They stumble upon a secret facility where nefarious experiments are being conducted on young women. Bajie, being Bajie, can't resist getting involved, and Ava sees firsthand the lengths he's willing to go to save someone in need.
Back in the mining prison, Sunny's chance at escape finally comes when he and a group of other prisoners are taken to the fighting pit. A fierce battle ensues, and it's in this moment that we see just how much Sunny's powers have been diminished. But even as he struggles, he spots someone from his past - a figure thought to be dead.
"Enter the Phoenix" sets the stage for the rest of the season, introducing new characters and hinting at the larger conflict to come. There are betrayals, alliances, and plenty of action to keep fans of the show hooked. The characters we know and love are faced with new challenges, both physical and emotional, and it's clear that no one is safe in the Badlands. Will Sunny be reunited with his son, Henry? What is Pilgrim truly after? And who is the mysterious figure stalking the Barons? These are just some of the questions that this season premiere sets up, leaving the audience eagerly anticipating what's to come.
