In the second episode of season one of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell titled "How is Lady Pole?," the story picks up after the terrible events of the last episode. Lady Pole, who was resurrected by Mr Norrell in exchange for a deal with a mysterious gentleman, is struggling to come to terms with her new existence. She is not the same person she was before, and she is plagued by a constant sense of unease.
Meanwhile, Strange is becoming more and more obsessed with the magic that he has discovered. He begins to experiment with new spells and incantations, much to the chagrin of Mr Norrell, who is concerned about the impact that such experimentation could have on the world. Despite his reservations, Mr Norrell encourages Strange to continue his research in the hopes that he can be controlled.
As the two magicians work together, they begin to uncover the truth about the gentleman who made a deal with Norrell. They discover that he is not what he seems, and they are forced to make a difficult decision about how to deal with him. In the midst of all this, Lady Pole continues to suffer, and her condition worsens with each passing day.
As the episode progresses, we are introduced to a number of new characters, including a group of street magicians who are hellbent on exposing Norrell as a fraud. We also learn more about the history of magic in England and the role that magicians have played in shaping the country's destiny.
Overall, "How is Lady Pole?" is a gripping and engaging episode that builds on the themes introduced in the first episode. We learn more about the world in which these characters live, and we begin to understand the dangers that magic can pose when misused. At the same time, we are drawn deeper into the story of Lady Pole, and we come to sympathize with her plight as she struggles to come to grips with her new reality. With strong performances by the cast and excellent writing, this episode sets the stage for what promises to be an exciting and unforgettable season of television.
