In "All the Mirrors of the World," the fourth episode of season 1 of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, the tensions between the two magicians continue to mount as they both attempt to assert their power and influence over the world of English magic. Mr Norrell remains convinced that only he should be allowed to practice his craft and control the very foundations of magic in the country, while Jonathan Strange is starting to see the value in exploring new and different forms of magic that might help them to achieve their goals.

As the episode opens, we see Strange begin to explore one of these alternative forms of magic: the use of mirrors to transport people across vast distances. While Mr Norrell is understandably skeptical of this approach, Strange remains determined to see it through and spends much of the episode experimenting with different mirror configurations and techniques.

Meanwhile, we get to see more of the political and social landscape of this version of early 19th-century England, as we are introduced to various characters who are dealing with the consequences of the ongoing war with France. We meet a group of soldiers who have been sent home from the front lines, only to find themselves struggling to rebuild their lives in the aftermath of the conflict. We also learn more about the relationship between Lady Pole, who remains trapped in a state of enchanted sleep, and her fiancé Sir Walter, who is desperate to find a way to snap her out of her magical slumber.

As the episode progresses, we see the various storylines weaving together in unexpected ways. Strange's experiments with mirrors begin to yield results, but also lead to some unintended consequences. Meanwhile, Mr Norrell grows increasingly paranoid and mistrustful of anyone who might be working against him, which leads him to take some drastic actions that put him at odds with Strange and other members of the magical community.

Overall, "All the Mirrors of the World" is another compelling episode of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell that continues to build on the show's complex blend of magic, politics, and social commentary. The performances remain strong across the board, with both Bertie Carvel and Eddie Marsan continuing to impress as the titular characters. The episode also benefits from the show's lush visual style, which captures both the brooding atmosphere of the era and the intricate details of the various magical spells and illusions. Fans of the book will undoubtedly find much to enjoy here, while newcomers to the series may be enticed by the intriguing mix of historical drama and fantasy elements.
