Dan Vasser is a loyal family man, a successful journalist and a time traveler. In season 1 episode 4, titled "The Year of the Rabbit," Vasser finds himself transported to San Francisco in 1997, where he is tasked with preventing a young woman's untimely death.
The woman in question is named Cat, and she is a classmate of Dan's wife, Katie. Despite their connection, Dan has never met Cat before. He observes her as she attends a protest in Chinatown against the Chinese government's proposed relocation of residents. While he is distracted by this, he misses his opportunity to save Cat from being hit by a car.
Dan soon learns that Cat's death was not an accident, but rather the work of her abusive ex-boyfriend, who believes that Cat is pregnant with his child. Dan must navigate this complicated situation while also facing the return of Livia, his ex-fiancee who died years ago in a plane crash, and who he has encountered multiple times during his time travels.
As Dan tries to prevent Cat's death, he must also navigate the complex relationships between Cat and her ex-boyfriend, as well as between Cat and her father, who owns a restaurant in Chinatown. Dan learns that Cat's father had to make deals with those in power in order to keep his restaurant open, and that he is reluctant to help with the relocation protests for fear of losing everything.
As the episode progresses, Dan becomes more involved in the movement to save Chinatown, while also trying to protect Cat from harm. Along the way, he encounters Livia once again, who urges him to remember the importance of his responsibilities in the present.
"The Year of the Rabbit" is a tense and emotional episode that showcases the complex relationships and challenges that Dan Vasser faces in his travels through time. His efforts to prevent Cat's death highlight themes of domestic violence, activism, and the importance of family, all set against the backdrop of a rapidly changing San Francisco.
