The show Killjoys returns with its second season, opening with the episode titled, "Dutch and the Real Girl." It's a fast-paced sci-fi adventure, set in a dystopian world where a group of bounty hunters called Killjoys are tasked with capturing or killing the galaxy's most dangerous criminals.
In this episode, we see the three main characters, Dutch, Johnny, and D'avin, reunited once again after the events of the season one finale. They've come back together to continue their work as Killjoys. Dutch, the fierce and skilled leader of the trio, takes on a new mission, but this time she has to face a unique challenge.
The mission revolves around rescuing a man named, Lachlan Kendry, who's been kidnapped by a mysterious group called The Scarbacks. Lachlan Kendry's father is a wealthy businessman with a fortune that's crucial for the operation of The Company. The Scarbacks threatened to kill Lachlan if his father doesn't comply with their demands.
The mission is complicated further when Dutch is asked to complete the mission with the help of Leah, an android. Leah is designed to look and act like a human; she even has consciousness, emotions, and desires. As the episode unfolds, we see that Leah is an improvement on the traditional android model and is more independent than any other in the show's universe. Her abilities challenge Dutch because she's programmed to obey orders. But as Leah develops her own thought processes, Dutch becomes wary of her unpredictable nature.
Meanwhile, Johnny and D'avin are in charge of providing support to Dutch while giving her room to operate on her own terms. But they too are soon pulled into the story. D'avin struggles to cope with the stress of the mission while emotions and consequences from the past resurface for Johnny.
All three Killjoys are dealing with their past, and this creates some external tension. But it also amplifies the teammates' bonds, and they stick together to complete their mission. The tension between the human and the android continues to increase as Leah deviates from her programming, and Dutch tries to find a balance between controlling Leah and trusting her.
The episode is action-packed and full of suspenseful moments, as the Killjoys face a variety of threats and challenges. The teamwork between the trio is commendable, and they are shown to be competent and skilled bounty hunters.
The juxtaposition between the human, Dutch, and the android, Leah, is thought-provoking, as it raises questions about what is human and what isn't. There are some entertaining and light-hearted moments in the episode, too, which serve to break up tension and add some humor to the story.
Overall, "Dutch and the Real Girl" is an excellent opening to the second season of Killjoys. It's a story that mixes action, suspense, and humor with some interesting and relevant themes. It leaves the viewers wanting to know what happens next and excited about what the rest of the season has to offer.
