Episode 2 of Killjoys' fourth season titled "Johnny Dangerously" follows the aftermath of the team's successful mission to save Old Town. Johnny Jaqobis, the tech expert of the group, is in deep trouble after the previous season's finale, where he got injected with Green Plasma by his brother D'Avin.
Johnny is dealing with severe pain, both physically and mentally. He can't sleep, has visions of his dead father, and is writhing in pain. The team seeks advice from Zeph, a scientist who has been working on a cure for the green plasma and finds out that Johnny's body is rejecting the cure. The team tries multiple times to find a cure, but nothing seems to work.
In the meantime, The Lady is still on the loose, using people as hosts and building up her army to rule the universe. The team knows they have to stop her before it's too late, but they are at a loss since they do not know where she is. Delle Seyah Kendry, the villain turned ally from the previous season, suggests that they enlist the help of someone named Jaia. Apparently, Jaia knows about The Lady's location.
The team goes to Jaia, who is a psychic/space witch. Jaia tells them about a ritual she has to perform to locate The Lady. The ritual involves Johnny being in a state of deep trance, and Jaia using her powers to connect to his mind. There is a risk of Johnny dying if the ritual doesn't work or if Jaia makes a mistake. Despite the risk, Johnny decides to go ahead with the ritual.
During the ritual, Johnny is transported to an alternate reality where he is a spy called "Johnny Dangerously." In this alternate reality, his brother D'Avin is an actor, and his partner Dutch is a singer. This alternate world is a nod to the 1984 movie "Johnny Dangerously."
In the alternate reality, Johnny/Dangerously has to complete a mission to rescue the President of the United States from the villainous Mother Mayhem and her henchmen. Along the way, he meets Hunky Husband, a character played by D'Avin, who is married to Mother Mayhem but has his own motivations.
The alternate reality serves as a metaphor for Johnny's inner struggle, with him trying to balance his pain, love for his friends, and the larger mission of saving the universe from The Lady. At the same time, the storyline brings in humor and an entertaining change of pace.
The episode ends with Johnny waking up, having successfully completed the ritual. Jaia has located The Lady, and the team now has a new mission. However, it's clear that Johnny is far from over his struggles. The episode effectively sets up the larger arc for the season while giving enough space for character growth and world-building.
Overall, "Johnny Dangerously" stands out as a well-executed episode that blends humor, action, and deeper character arcs. It is a testament to the show's ability to keep its audience engaged through intriguing plotlines and relatable characters.
