- November 25, 2009
In season 17 episode 53 of the Late Show with David Letterman, two very special guests appeared - Academy Award-winning actress Natalie Portman and singer/songwriter Adam Lambert.
The episode opened with David Letterman delivering his signature top 10 list, which on this particular night was focused on the top 10 things overheard backstage at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. The audience laughed as Letterman deadpanned jokes about overpriced dog food and canine flatulence.
After the top 10 list, Natalie Portman took the stage to discuss her recent film projects and her role in the upcoming Marvel film Thor: The Dark World. Portman looked stunning in a white midi dress with black polka dots and a pair of black pumps. She spoke about what it was like working with the rest of the cast in Thor: The Dark World, and how much she enjoyed playing her character, Jane Foster. Portman also talked about the challenges of working on set while pregnant with her first child.
Following their conversation, Letterman introduced Adam Lambert, who performed his latest hit single, "Ghost Town." Lambert, who wore a black leather jacket and pants with a bright red undershirt, belted out his hit single with ease, hitting all the high notes flawlessly. The audience showed their appreciation with a standing ovation, and Letterman asked Lambert about his latest tour and what he had in store for his fans.
The show continued with another comedy segment, this time with comedian Tommy Johnagin. Johnagin, a stand-up comedian, poked fun at his own lack of athleticism in a hilarious bit about playing sports in middle school and high school. He had the audience in stitches as he recounted his experiences trying to keep up with his more skilled and athletic classmates.
After the commercial break, Portman returned to the stage to talk about her involvement with the upcoming film, A Tale of Love and Darkness. Portman explained that the film was based on the memoir of the same name by Israeli author Amos Oz, and that she directed the film in addition to starring in it. She spoke about the challenges of directing, as well as the creative choices she made on the film.
The show wrapped up with a performance by the band Wilco, who performed their song "Random Name Generator." The audience swayed along to the rhythm of the folk rock tune, and Letterman congratulated them on their upcoming 20th anniversary as a band.
Overall, season 17 episode 53 of the Late Show with David Letterman was a fun and entertaining episode featuring two talented guests in Natalie Portman and Adam Lambert, as well as a great performance by Wilco, making it a must-watch for any fan of late night talk shows.
