The season 14 episode 21 of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit named Poisoned Motive revolves around the case of a woman found dead in her apartment. The investigation is launched when the victim's neighbor reports a foul odor coming from her apartment. The victim is identified as Vivian Welsey, a successful businesswoman who owned her own cosmetics company. As the detectives start to dig deeper, it's discovered that Vivian had numerous secrets and numerous people who had grudges against her.

Detective Amanda Rollins gets in touch with one of Vivian's former boyfriends who reveals that he and Vivian had broken up because he had caught her having an affair with one of her employees. Detective Nick Amaro is sent to the victim's company to gather more information, and he discovers that the employee she was having an affair with was none other than her right-hand man, Eric Lutz. Eric had been working for Vivian for a long time and was seen as the successor to her company. There was always a tension between Eric and Vivian because she didn't trust him enough to run the company.

Detective Olivia Benson and Detective Odafin Tutuola go to Vivian's apartment to gather more evidence. There, they discover that Vivian had invested a large sum of money in a new product that happened to be a scam. This product had caused numerous health issues for those who had used it, and Vivian had kept quiet about the complaints that had been coming in from her customers.

The detectives also find out that Vivian had recently been sued by her former business partner because of this product. The business partner had alerted Vivian about the scam, but she had ignored the warnings and had continued selling the product. Benson and Tutuola start to suspect that the business partner might have something to do with Vivian's murder.

As the investigation progresses, it's revealed that Vivian had also been having troubles with her family. Her sister had constantly been borrowing money from her, and her father had recently passed away, leaving Vivian in charge of his estate. Vivian's brother resented her for being the favorite child, and he was also upset about not getting the lion's share of their father's estate.

The detectives try to piece all these clues together to find out who the killer might be. They interview all the suspects and gather more information about Vivian's life. They discover that Vivian had been planning to sell her company to a bigger corporation, and Eric had been doing his best to convince her to sell it to him instead.

The detectives finally identify the killer after analyzing the evidence found in Vivian's apartment. They make an arrest, and the killer reveals her motive for killing Vivian. The killer had been one of Vivian's customers who had been affected by the scam product. She had developed a serious health condition because of the product and had been ignored by Vivian when she'd tried to get a refund. The killer had been driven by revenge and had decided to take matters into her own hands.

The episode ends with the killer being booked and the detectives reflecting on how greed and deception had caused Vivian's downfall. Law & Order: Special Victims Unit explores themes such as betrayal, greed, and deception in this episode and highlights the importance of trust and transparency in all business dealings.
