In season 2 episode 3 of Life Below Zero: Northern Territories titled "Hell or High Water," viewers are taken on a journey with several individuals living off the grid in some of the harshest conditions in Alaska. With winter fast approaching, these hardy individuals are working hard to prepare for the months ahead.

One of the main subjects of the episode is Sue Aikens, who owns and operates the Kavik River Camp in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Aikens is preparing for winter by performing maintenance on her camp's infrastructure and making sure she has enough supplies to last through the winter. However, things take a turn when the nearby river begins to rise rapidly due to melting ice upstream. Aikens and her team scramble to move equipment and supplies to higher ground as the water continues to rise.

Another subject of the episode is Gwich'in trapper, Charlie Jagow, who relies on his traplines to provide for himself and his family. Jagow must adapt to changing weather conditions and shifting animal patterns in order to have a successful trapping season. In this episode, he sets out on his trapline to check his snares and traps, risking his life in dangerous conditions to collect beaver and marten.

Additionally, viewers get a glimpse into the life of the Hailstones, a family who live in a dry cabin in the Brooks Range. The family is preparing for winter by gathering firewood, and they also venture out into the wilderness to collect roots and berries for food. Later in the episode, the family is faced with a difficult decision when their supply of fresh water runs dangerously low. They must choose whether to brave the treacherous terrain to collect more water or risk running out.

Finally, viewers are introduced to a new character, Jessie Homes, who lives alone in a remote cabin and is striving to establish a self-sufficient lifestyle. Homes must contend with a lack of running water and electricity while working on building her cabin and gathering firewood. She is also beginning to explore her new surroundings and sets out on a hunt for moose with her dog.

Throughout the episode, viewers witness the resilience and determination of these individuals as they face constant challenges in their day-to-day lives. Whether moving supplies to higher ground or risking their safety to collect much-needed resources, these individuals are all living life below zero in their own unique ways.
