It's Better to Give Than to Receive is the twelfth episode of Living Biblically's first season. Chip's strict adherence to the Bible's teachings lead him to reconsider his approach to Christmas and gift-giving. He is initially hesitant when his wife, Leslie, suggests they draw names instead of buying gifts for everyone. His reluctance stems from the fact that he takes pride in being a thoughtful gift-giver and worries that drawing names would remove the personal touch that he values so much. Despite his reservations, Chip eventually agrees to take part in the drawing.

Things become more complicated when the person he draws turns out to be a waiter at his favorite diner, Andrew, whom he barely knows. Andrew has always been pleasant to Chip but the two have never really talked outside of their usual diner exchanges. Chip initially struggles with finding the right gift for Andrew, unsure of what someone he barely knows might want or need. Matters are further complicated when Andrew reveals that he is struggling financially and won't be able to afford gifts for his family. In keeping with the episode's title, Chip decides to give Andrew a generous gift, regardless of how well they know each other.

Meanwhile, Father Gene is feeling left out of the Christmas festivities as the other members of the clergy are all busy with holiday preparations. He turns to Rabbi Gil for advice on how to find meaning in the holiday season. Together they ponder the meaning of the phrase, "It's better to give than to receive," and Father Gene comes to the conclusion that his role is to spread joy by giving of himself.

Back at the diner, Chip struggles to hide the fact that he's the one who gave Andrew a large sum of money to use on Christmas presents. He is forced to confront his own motivations for giving and the pride he takes in being a thoughtful gift-giver. Ultimately, Chip learns that the true meaning of giving is to do so without expectation or recognition.

This is an emotionally touching episode that highlights the value of selflessness and generosity during the holiday season. It is a testament to the show's underlying message that Chip's adherence to the Bible's teachings brought him to a place of greater compassion and understanding. The performances throughout the episode are solid, particularly from the show's lead, Jay R. Ferguson. Overall, It's Better to Give Than to Receive is an endearing installment in Living Biblically's first season.
