Ep 11. Urban Versus Suburban

In Love It or List It Season 7 Episode 11 titled "Urban Versus Suburban", the show's hosts, designer Hilary Farr and real estate expert David Visentin, are presented with a new challenge as they help a couple decide whether to stay in their urban home or make the move to the suburbs.

The couple, Adam and Sarah, have been living in their urban home for over a decade and while they love the city life, they are considering making the move to the suburbs for more space and a better school district for their children. Their current home is a 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom house that they have outgrown. Sarah loves the character of their home, its proximity to the city's amenities, and the established neighborhood, while Adam loves the convenience of the location and the short commute to his job downtown.

Hilary’s objective is to redesign and remodel their existing home to accommodate their growing family's needs, while David's goal is to find them a spacious suburban property with a backyard and desirable school district. Both hosts present their proposals, and the couple has to decide if they should love their improved home or if they should list it and move to the suburbs.

David takes Adam and Sarah to three different suburban homes that he thinks could meet their criteria. The first house is a modern new build with four bedrooms, four bathrooms, and a backyard. The second home is a cozy four-bedroom ranch, also with a backyard. The third home features plenty of living space, five bedrooms, and a big backyard with a pool. All the houses David presents have enough space for the family to grow and excellent school districts, which are essential for their children’s education.

Meanwhile, Hilary’s plans for the current home include reconfiguring the layout of the first floor by removing all non-load-bearing walls, which will result in an open concept design. The newly renovated space will allow for a bigger kitchen, a living room, and a new dining area that leads out to a backyard deck. The upstairs space will be modified to create three bedrooms and two full bathrooms, including a master bedroom and en suite. Hilary plans to give the house a more modern look with neutral colors with bold accents.

After seeing all the options, Adam and Sarah are torn between listing their current home or loving the home renovations. While David's suburban options were impressive, the couple has sentimental memories of their neighborhood and city life. They eventually make a decision to either love their improved urban home or list it and move to the suburbs.
