Mar de Plastico is a Spanish television series that follows the investigation of a murder that happens in the region of Almeria, Southern Spain. The first episode, aptly titled "Episode 1," starts with the discovery of the body of a young woman on a vast plastic plantation known as Mar de Plastico, the main setting for this series. The victim, Ainhoa Sánchez, is a young woman who has just returned to town after studying in Madrid. She was working in one of the greenhouses where vegetables are grown.

When the police arrive at the scene, the initial assumption is that Ainhoa fell from the scaffolding and died in a tragic accident. But her brother, a local cop, does not believe it. He confronts the lead detective, Hector Aguirre, informing him that his sister was murdered. Hector is suspicious as well and starts investigating Ainhoa's death.

The first episode of Mar de Plastico introduces us to a wide range of characters in the world of Almeria's plastic industry. The main suspect is Rafael Amadeo, the owner of the greenhouse where Ainhoa worked. Ainhoa initially hesitated working there as she had heard rumors of Rafael's predatory behavior towards women. Rafael also makes his initial appearance menacingly eyeing Ainhoa.

Apart from Rafael, other characters include the town's mayor, Quintana, who is dealing with his own financial problems, and Ainhoa's father, Miguel, who works for a plastic company and is not pleased with his daughter's wishes to move away.

We also encounter more police characters such as Hector's assistant officer, Salva, who is keen on climbing up and becoming a detective; and Eva, who seems to have a personal connection with Ainhoa. Another interesting character is Fran, who has a crush on Ainhoa and is not afraid to reveal it.

The series also highlights the struggles of migrant workers in these greenhouses. Workers are often exploited, and their working conditions are extremely poor, with low wages and inhumane living conditions. One such worker is Faruq, an African immigrant who works with Ainhoa at the greenhouse where she was stationed.

As Hector and his team investigate the case, they face several obstacles along the way. For instance, Rafael refuses to cooperate with the police, leading Hector to believe that he has something to hide. Meanwhile, Faruq is deported from Spain after his immigration documents are found to be false, and Eva is forced to keep silent about a piece of evidence that implicates someone they know in the crime.

The first episode sets up a tense, suspenseful atmosphere as the search for Ainhoa's killer begins. With multiple possible suspects and various subplots taking place alongside the main narrative, audiences are sure to be kept on the edge of their seats. The series showcases a complex web of relationships that spans multiple generations, cultures, and backgrounds, all existing in the shadow of the vast Mar de Plastico.
