  • October 28, 1984

In episode 1 of season 14 of Masterpiece, viewers are introduced to The Barchester Chronicles, based on the novels of Anthony Trollope. The story takes place in mid-19th century England and centers around the clergy of the fictional town of Barchester.

The episode opens with the arrival of a new bishop, Dr. Proudie, played by Clive Swift. He is accompanied by his overbearing and meddling wife, Mrs. Proudie, played by Geraldine McEwan. They quickly make their presence known in Barchester, much to the chagrin of the other clergy members.

The long-standing warden of Hiram's Hospital, Mr. Harding, played by Donald Pleasence, finds himself at the center of a controversy when John Bold, played by Nigel Hawthorne, begins questioning the legality and morality of the warden's sizable income. This leads to a clash between Bold and Mr. Harding's son-in-law, Dr. Grantly, played by David Gwillim, who is also the archdeacon of Barchester.

As tensions rise between the different factions of the clergy, a love triangle develops between Eleanor Bold, played by Susan Hampshire, John Bold's sister; Dr. Slope, played by Alan Rickman, a chaplain who is competing with Mr. Harding's older daughter, Charlotte, played by Janet Maw, for his affections; and Bertie Stanhope, played by Peter Blythe, a suitor who is not taken seriously by Eleanor.

The episode sets up the various conflicts and relationships that will develop over the course of the series, while also providing a glimpse into the hierarchy and politics of the Anglican church at the time. The costumes and set design are meticulously crafted to evoke the time period, and the performances of the all-star cast are top-notch.

Overall, fans of period dramas and literature adaptations will find much to enjoy in The Barchester Chronicles. The themes of morality, power, and love are explored through the interactions of a colorful cast of characters, each with their own agenda and flaws. As the season progresses, viewers will be drawn deeper into the world of Barchester and the struggles of its inhabitants.
