Masterpiece Season 14 Episode 2

Masterpiece Season 14 Episode 2 The Barchester Chronicles (2)

  • November 4, 1984

Based on the novels written by Anthony Trollope, The Barchester Chronicles continue to follow the story of the clergy and their families in the fictional town of Barchester. The second episode of season 14 (titled as The Barchester Chronicles (2)) explores the ongoing tension between the proud Archdeacon Grantly, played by Nigel Hawthorne, and the gentle and naive John Bold, played by David Gwillim.

At the outset of this episode, John Bold has only recently won a lawsuit against Hiram's Hospital, which has been stealing money from the church. Although he is pleased with the outcome, John is conflicted about taking the position of warden himself and instead asks the bishop to appoint a man from the hospital as his successor. In doing so, John hopes to avoid making enemies among the town's clergy.

Meanwhile, Archdeacon Grantly is far from thrilled with John's win, which he sees as a direct threat to the church's financial stability. Grantly feels that John has taken advantage of his sister, Eleanor, who was once in a romantic relationship with John. Now, he believes that John is using his connection to Eleanor to undermine the church, and he sets out to convince the bishop to take legal action against John.

As tensions rise between these two characters, we see the effects of their conflict ripple throughout the town of Barchester. A group of church wardens comes under pressure to choose sides in the dispute, and we see how their loyalties are split between the two men. Additionally, we see how the growing rift between John and Archdeacon Grantly affects Eleanor, who is still in love with John and is tormented by the animosity between him and her brother.

Throughout the episode, there are also several subplots that deepen our understanding of the community in Barchester. We see the influence of the press, as a reporter from the Jupiter nudges his way into the town's affairs. We learn about the growing romantic relationship between the widowed Mrs. Bold and Dr. Grantly, much to the chagrin of the archdeacon's wife. And we witness the ongoing power struggle between the bishop and his chaplain, who both believe they should have more influence over the town's affairs.

Despite its many plotlines, The Barchester Chronicles (2) is never confusing or convoluted. Instead, the episode moves at a steady pace, deftly weaving together its different elements to create a nuanced portrayal of a small community in upheaval. The performances are uniformly strong, with Nigel Hawthorne delivering a standout turn as the prideful and manipulative Archdeacon.

Overall, The Barchester Chronicles (2) is a satisfying continuation of a beloved series. Fans of the novels will find much to love in this episode, which stays true to the source material while also adding its own distinct flavor. And to those who are new to the world of Barchester, this episode is a great entry point, offering a tantalizing glimpse into the rich and complex world of Anthony Trollope's novels.
