Ep 5. Psychic vs. Skeptic

In season 1 episode 5 of Meet the Frasers, titled "Psychic vs. Skeptic," audiences are invited to witness the clash of two ideologies as two different schools of thought come together under one roof. We see Matt Fraser, the psychic medium, and his skeptical girlfriend Alexa Papigiotis attempting to navigate their relationship through these ever-present differences by seeking validation from a series of tried-and-tested methods.

Matt's uncle Steve, a renowned psychic medium in his own right, joins him for a session aimed at testing their ability to communicate with the other side. Steve introduces Matt to a new technique – automatic handwriting – which they both attempt. Matt's readings prove accurate once again, impressing Steve, and leaving Alexa a little taken aback.

As the couple makes their way to a photo shoot, they run into a fellow psychic medium, Angela. A tense conversation between Alexa and Angela ensues, with Alexa making it clear that she is unconvinced of the legitimacy of Angela’s work. Angela tries to impart some wisdom on Alexa, but the skeptic remains unconvinced.

Alexa is then introduced to a non-traditional therapy session where she is guided through past trauma in an attempt to find grounding and balance. The session focuses on opening up old wounds and exploring these experiences to gain perspective and find a way forward. This leads Alexa to evaluate her skepticism, leading her to question whether it is a mask for her fear of the unknown.

Eventually, all roads lead back to the couple as they navigate through the differences that are an essential part of their relationship. Matt, always the optimist, feels that Alexa’s newfound receptiveness is a sign of hope, while Alexa remains somewhat skeptical of Matt’s abilities.

By the end of the episode, viewers are left wondering if we will ever truly know if there is an afterlife. Will Matt and Alexa be able to find a balance that honours their differences and still loves and accepts each other? Can Alexa leave her skepticism behind and embrace the unknown with an open heart?

The episode leaves unanswered questions about the power of the psychic medium. Still, it recognises that this phenomena, like many others, can not be verified with empirical evidence. Regardless of whether or not people believe in psychic mediums, the show maintains that these beliefs will always come down to your perception and interpretation of the world around you.
