The Miss USA is a live televised scholarship pageant that features representatives from all 50 states and the District of Columbia vying for the coveted title of Miss USA. The winner and runner-ups win thousands of dollars in scholarship money, cash, prizes and even a car. The show is currently hosted by Andy Cohen and Guiliana Rancic. The telecast begins with a dance number and the parade of states, where all 50 contestants individually stand before the microphone and introduce themselves while wearing a costume that represents their state. The next phase is the announcement of the top 12 semi-finalists. As the name of each semi-finalist is called, her combined preliminary score is revealed. The preliminary scores are compiled through a week long competition that is held a week prior to the pageant. Contestants are judged on swimsuit, evening gown and interview. The competition heats up with the swimsuit competition. Each semi-finalist is introduced wearing either a two-piece bikini or one-piece swimsuit. Like runway models, the contestant is required to walk down a set of steps and strike a pose in front of screaming fans and judges. As the contestant walks off the stage, her score is flashed on the screen. The contestants go on the next phase, which is the evening gown competition. The ladies follow the same routine as the bikini phase but are now wearing luxurious evening gowns. The evening gown score is also flashed on the screen for home viewers. After the bikini and evening gown scores are combined, the competition is whittled down to five contestants. The top five must answer random questions that are asked by judges or chosen off Facebook. The prior Miss USA titleholder takes a farewell walk, while a speech about her Miss USA experience is played. The count begins with the announcement of the fourth runner-up, third runner-up, second runner-up, the first runner-up, and winner. The new Miss USA is crowned by her predecessor and takes the obligatory winner's walk.
