Self-Proclaimed Psychic: Reigen Arataka ~And Mob~ is the first episode of Mob Psycho 100's first season. The episode starts with a young boy named Shigeo Kageyama, who is nicknamed "Mob," revealing his psychic abilities to his classmates. However, he tries his best to keep a low profile and refrain from using his powers because he believes that his powers may be a curse rather than a blessing.
Mob seeks the help of a self-proclaimed psychic named Reigen Arataka to teach him how to control his powers. Reigen has no psychic abilities but claims to be able to handle any supernatural phenomena with his "expertise" in the field. Reigen's office is filled with symbols, books, and spiritual artworks that give the impression of a serious psychic's lair.
Reigen convinces Mob to become his assistant, and he assigns him various tasks like cleaning his office, answering calls, and organizing events. Reigen tells Mob that working with him will help him learn how to handle his powers and control his emotions.
Mob spends a significant part of the episode thinking about how he should approach his psychic abilities. He doesn't want to end up like his master, who is considered a fraud by other psychics. Mob's introspection is broken when a young girl, who claims to be lost and in need of help, enters Reigen's office.
Reigen sees an opportunity to prove his skills and attempts to exorcise a spirit that the girl claims follows her. However, before he can do anything, the spirit possesses Mob's body and starts wrecking the office. Mob, unable to control his body, starts attacking Reigen and the girl.
Reigen, who is not afraid of such situations, manages to convince Mob to calm down and assert control of his powers. Reigen reminds Mob that he is not cursed by his powers, and he should learn to use them as a tool to help people.
Later, a gang of thugs enters Reigen's office and demands he pays for the damages that Mob caused during his possession. Reigen, using his charismatic persona, convinces the gang to leave without a fight.
