Mom is a funny and endearing American television sitcom that follows the life of Christy Plunkett, a single mother, and recovering alcoholic. The show is created by Chuck Lorre, Eddie Gorodetsky, and Gemma Baker, and premiered on CBS on September 23, 2013. The first episode is called "Pilot."

Christy is a single mother who is trying to get her life back on track after being sober for six months. She works as a waitress at a restaurant and attends Alcoholics Anonymous meetings regularly. Her relationship with her mother, Bonnie, is strained, as Bonnie was an alcoholic while Christy was growing up and was not there for her daughter.

The first episode starts with Christy's attempt to quit smoking, which leads her to attend a meeting where she comes across other people struggling with addiction. She meets a new member named Regina and befriends her. Regina brings Christy to her house after the meeting, introduces her to her husband and friends, and offers her some cocaine.

Christy leaves and goes to her work, where she waits on a handsome man named Gabriel. Gabriel asks her out on a date, and she agrees to go. Meanwhile, her daughter Violet is dealing with some teenage angst and wants to spend Halloween with her friends instead of doing a family tradition. Christy insists that they continue with the tradition and takes Violet to pick up her younger half-brother Roscoe, who Christy had when she was still using.

Christy's mother, Bonnie, stops by to drop off birthday presents for Roscoe. Bonnie is also a recovering alcoholic and has been sober for over three years. She is currently living with her wealthy boyfriend, Adam, but she is unhappy and feels like she is not getting the support she needs to remain sober.

The episode ends with Christy going on her first date with Gabriel, while Violet goes out with her friends for Halloween. Bonnie shows up at the restaurant and tells Christy that she is proud of her and that she loves her, but Christy is hesitant to accept her mother's affection.

Overall, the pilot episode of Mom is a great introduction to the show's complex and lovable characters. The episode does an excellent job of establishing the relationships between the characters and setting up the series' themes of addiction, recovery, and family. The show's humor is sharp and witty, and the writing is heartfelt and emotional without ever veering into melodrama.

The performances by the cast are impressive, especially Anna Faris as Christy and Allison Janney as Bonnie. Faris brings a vulnerability and strength to the role of Christy, while Janney imbues her character with a mix of humor and pathos. The supporting cast is also strong, with standout performances from Sadie Calvano as Violet and Nate Corddry as Gabriel.

Overall, the pilot episode of Mom is a great start to the series, and it is easy to see why it has garnered critical and commercial success. The show balances humor and drama expertly, and it is a must-watch for anyone who enjoys touching family dramas or witty comedies.
