In the caper series Money Heist, a group of skilled criminals develops a plot to swipe billions of euros from the Mint of Spain. A mysterious criminal nicknamed "The Professor" puts together a team of skilled thieves. Their plan involves hostage taking, negotiations with the police, and lots of other elements that are extremely risky. Their ultimate goal is to hold the Mint for a period of time. While they're inside, they'll print huge amounts of money before making their getaway. Of course, the caper doesn't go exactly according to plan. But it is successful enough to inspire the team to plan a second robbery after the first. The series originally debuted on the Spanish Antena 3 network in 2017. After its first 15 episodes aired in Spain, Netflix acquired the rights to the series. The original episodes were re-tooled into 22 shorter episodes. These new episodes debuted on Netflix in 2017 and 2018. A third eight-episode season premiered on Netflix in 2019. A fourth eight-episode season debuted on Netflix in 2020. The series has garnered almost unanimous positive reviews. Critics have praised its complex storytelling and compelling visual style. Its debut seasons won numerous awards both in Spain and internationally. It won the Best Drama award at the International Emmy Awards in 2018. However, some controversy has followed the series. In some incidents, real criminals have copied the techniques and costumes of the fictional criminals as they have carried out their crimes.
