On September 9, 1989, MTV aired the 6th Annual Video Music Awards from the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles, California. The show was hosted by comedian Arsenio Hall, who kicked off the night with an energetic dance number.
The show opened with a performance by Madonna, who sang "Express Yourself" while dressed in a black and gold corset and thigh-high boots. The performance included a dance routine with several male dancers, as well as video clips from the song's music video.
