Kate (Keri Lynn Pratt) and PJ (Jordana Spiro) have been friends for a long time, but neither of them has ever shown any interest in each other. When PJ starts dating Brendan (Reid Scott), Kate starts to feel jealous and reaches out to PJ to talk about what's going on. PJ brushes off Kate's concerns, saying that she's happy with Brendan and doesn't want to jeopardize their relationship. However, when PJ's ex-boyfriend Bobby (Andrew McCarthy) comes back into town, she starts to question whether or not she made the right choice.

Meanwhile, Mike (Jamie Kaler) and Kenny (Michael Bunin) are having their own relationship problems. Mike is trying to get back together with his ex-wife Stephanie (Kellee Stewart), but Stephanie isn't interested. Kenny tries to help Mike out by setting up a fake online profile for him on a dating website, but things quickly go awry when Mike starts getting messages from someone he's not interested in.

As the episode goes on, the characters struggle to interpret the mixed signals they're receiving from one another. PJ can't tell if Bobby is genuinely interested in her or just looking for a quick hookup. Kate can't tell if PJ is really happy with Brendan or just trying to convince herself that she is. And Mike can't tell if Stephanie is playing hard to get or if she really doesn't want to be with him.

Throughout the episode, the characters are forced to confront their own insecurities and prejudices, and learn to communicate more effectively with one another. Kate realizes that her jealousy towards PJ is more about her own fear of being alone than anything else, and PJ realizes that she's been taking Brendan for granted and needs to be more honest with him about her feelings. Mike realizes that his fixation on Stephanie is preventing him from seeing other potential partners, and Kenny realizes that his own biases about online dating are preventing him from being truly helpful to his friend.

By the end of the episode, things have mostly worked themselves out. PJ decides to break things off with Bobby and commit fully to Brendan, while Kate makes peace with the fact that she and PJ are just friends. Mike decides to take a break from pursuing Stephanie and focus on other areas of his life, while Kenny decides to be more open-minded about online dating and helps Mike set up a new, more honest profile.

Overall, "Mixed Signals" is a strong second episode for My Boys. It continues to develop the relationships between the main characters in interesting and surprising ways, while also introducing new storylines and conflicts. The writing is sharp and funny, and the performances from the cast are engaging and believable. Overall, it's a great introduction to the world of My Boys and sets the stage for many more entertaining episodes to come.
