Season 16 of Mysteries at the Museum has already begun, and episode 2 is titled Transatlantic Zeppelin. This episode delves into the fascinating story of a luxury airship that made its way across the Atlantic, carrying passengers in style and comfort. However, what starts as a tale of luxury quickly turns into a heart-wrenching account of a tragedy that shook the world.

The episode begins with host Don Wildman introducing viewers to the Hindenburg, the most famous of all zeppelins. He then takes us back to the early 20th century when commercial air travel was still a distant dream. We are introduced to an entrepreneur named Hugo Eckener who had an idea that could revolutionize the way we travel.

Eckener had a vision of creating an airship that could fly across the Atlantic, connecting the old world with the new. This was an idea that was met with skepticism and doubt by many, but Eckener was determined to see it through. He rallied a team of engineers and set about building the LZ-126, a marvel of engineering that could stay aloft for days on end.

After months of preparation, the LZ-126 finally set off on its maiden voyage in 1924. The airship was a sensation, drawing crowds wherever it went. It eventually made its way across the Atlantic, landing safely in New York City. The LZ-126 had proved that it was possible for an airship to cross the Atlantic, and Eckener had become a hero.

However, this success was short-lived. Just a few years later, another airship was making its way across the Atlantic, one that would become infamous for all the wrong reasons. The Hindenburg was the pride of Nazi Germany, a symbol of their technological prowess. It was billed as the ultimate luxury liner, featuring spacious staterooms, elegant restaurants, and even a smoking room.

The Hindenburg set off from Frankfurt, Germany, on May 6th, 1937, and was scheduled to land in New Jersey on May 9th. However, disaster struck just as the airship was coming in to land. The Hindenburg burst into flames, killing 36 people on board and injuring many more. The images of the burning airship would become iconic, forever etched into our collective memory.

In this episode of Mysteries at the Museum, Don Wildman takes us through the story of the Hindenburg, exploring the various theories surrounding the cause of the disaster. He visits the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum to view an unassuming piece of metal that played a vital role in the investigation into the cause of the Hindenburg's demise.

Along the way, Wildman also introduces us to other strange and fascinating objects, including a pair of glasses that once belonged to a famous author and a rare piece of pottery that reveals the secret of ancient Chinese technology. This episode of Mysteries at the Museum is a fascinating look at one of the most iconic disasters in aviation history, and the objects that help us to understand its cause.
