Mystery Science Theater 3000 Season 2 Episode 13 Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster

  • February 2, 1991

In season 2, the thirteenth episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000 is titled "Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster". In this classic Japanese monster movie, a group of young people set out to search for their missing brother on a deserted island only to stumble upon a terrorist organization planning to use a giant sea monster, Ebirah, to take over the world. But when Godzilla shows up to take on Ebirah, the puny humans get caught in the middle of an epic battle.

As always, the crew of the Satellite of Love are there to provide hilarious commentary throughout the movie. Joel and his robot friends Crow and Tom Servo make quips about the cheesy special effects, the over-the-top acting, and the ridiculous plot. They even manage to turn the film's low-budget shortcomings into a running gag, with recurring jokes about the abundance of stock footage and the use of obvious miniatures.

One of the highlights of the episode is when Joel and the bots perform a musical number titled "Godzilla Genealogy Bop", in which they sing about the different monsters that have appeared in the Godzilla movies up to that point. The song is full of puns and clever references, and it shows off the impressive musical skills of the MST3K team.

Another standout moment is when the crew gets sidetracked by a completely unrelated short film about a man who has trouble with his bow tie. The short is hilariously awkward and out of place, but Joel and the bots make the most of it by riffing on the characters and their predicament.

Fans of the Godzilla franchise will appreciate the nods to earlier films, such as the appearance of Mothra's twin fairies. And even those who aren't familiar with the series will find plenty to enjoy in the goofy humor and witty banter of the MST3K crew.

Overall, "Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster" is a fun episode that showcases some of the best moments of Mystery Science Theater 3000. It's a must-watch for fans of the show, and a great introduction for those who have never seen it before.
