Mystery Science Theater 3000 Season 6 Episode 18

Ep 18. High School Big Shot

  • December 10, 1994

In this episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000, the gang is forced to watch an incredibly cringe-worthy film called High School Big Shot. The film follows the story of a young high school student named Marv who is desperate to become popular and impress his crush. In order to do this, Marv turns to a life of crime, joining a gang and eventually stealing from his own father. The film is filled with awkward dialogue, wooden acting, and a plot that seems to go nowhere.

As usual, the MST3K gang does their best to make the film more enjoyable by adding their own brand of commentary. Joel, Tom Servo, and Crow all take turns riffing on the ridiculousness of the film, making fun of the cheesy special effects and terrible acting. They also come up with their own running jokes, such as referring to Marv's crush as "Sassy Pants" and mocking the film's unconvincing portrayal of a high school.

Throughout the episode, the gang also takes breaks to perform their usual skits and bits. For example, they do a parody of the opening of The Twilight Zone, with Tom Servo playing the part of Rod Serling. They also do a hilarious parody of the popular children's show Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, with Tom Servo playing Mister Rogers and Joel and Crow playing his puppet friends.

Despite the gang's best efforts, High School Big Shot proves to be a tough film to sit through. The plot is confusing and poorly developed, and the characters are all unlikeable. Marv, the main character, is particularly annoying, as he constantly whines and complains about his lack of popularity. Even when he turns to a life of crime, it's hard to feel any sympathy for him.

One of the highlights of the episode is the appearance of a special guest star: actor Adam West. West appears in several skits throughout the episode, including a hilarious parody of Batman. He also joins in on the riffing, adding his own jokes to the mix. West's presence adds a fun energy to the episode and his chemistry with the MST3K gang is clear.

Overall, High School Big Shot is a forgettable film, but the MST3K gang does their best to make it more enjoyable. The humor is hit-or-miss, but there are definitely some laugh-out-loud moments. And with the addition of Adam West, the episode feels like a special treat for fans of the show. If you're in the mood for some cheesy 1950s teen drama and some silly jokes, this episode is worth a watch.
