In this episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000, the gang watches The Skydivers, a 1963 film that centers around a group of skydivers who run into various personal and financial problems. As usual, Joel and the bots provide hilarious commentary throughout the movie, poking fun at the poor acting, cheesy dialogue, and confusing plot.
They start off by cracking jokes about the opening credits, which feature footage of actual skydiving that seems to go on forever. Tom Servo quips, "I think I've seen enough to last a lifetime," while Crow compares it to "being stuck in a theme park ride."
As the movie begins, we meet the main characters: a wealthy businessman named Harry Stanton and his wife Beth, who own a failing skydiving business. Harry is convinced that the key to success is hiring pro skydivers to draw a bigger crowd, but they soon realize that their new employees are a bunch of rowdy troublemakers.
Joel and the bots have a field day with the film's many awkward and unintentionally funny moments, such as a bizarre dream sequence in which Beth imagines herself flying through the air with a giant pair of wings. They also make fun of the characters' over-the-top reactions to everything, whether it's a skydiving accident or a simple conversation.
Throughout the movie, Joel and the bots riff on various topics ranging from the similarities between skydiving and riding a mechanical bull to the fact that every character seems to be holding a cigarette at all times. At one point, they even launch into an impromptu song about how boring the movie is.
As the plot develops, it becomes clear that Harry is up to no good. He's secretly plotting to sabotage his own skydiving business in order to collect insurance money, and he's willing to put people's lives at risk to do it. Joel and the bots have a great time pointing out the ridiculousness of Harry's plan and the terrible acting from the cast.
Overall, The Skydivers is a classic example of a bad movie that's perfect for riffing. Joel and the bots deliver plenty of laughs as they mercilessly mock the film's many flaws. If you're a fan of MST3K, this episode is definitely worth checking out.
