Ep 11. Sisterhood

As a nurse at All Saints' Hospital, Jackie Peyton may be the one who saves lives, but her complicated personal life is far from stable. Season six episode 11, named Sisterhood, sees conflicts brewing throughout the hospital just as Jackie is about to face a pivotal moment in her life.

The episode opens with Jackie being summoned to meet with All Saints' Hospital's CEO, Gloria Akalitus. Jackie's first thought is that she is being fired. She becomes even more apprehensive when she learns that FBI agents are present and Akalitus tells her that the hospital is under investigation for fraud. But Akalitus tasks Jackie with sorting through the finances and finding any anomalies. Things only get more complicated when an estranged Akalitus reveals that she is being sued for divorce because her wife is claiming she was duped in the marriage by a fake cancer diagnosis.

Meanwhile, Zoey Barkow, Jackie's friend, is dealing with personal conflict on the night shift. She's annoyed at young mother Ofelia who is admitted for a cold but insists on staying in until her MRI results come through. Jackie finds Zoey crying and offers to help her give tough love to Ofelia, but the young mother dismays Zoey by revealing that she is a probationary nurse also pulling a double shift and desperately needs the overtime. Jackie, faced with some tough financial decisions of her own, recognizes herself in Ofelia's situation, and with her classic tough-love approach, helps Zoey come up with a way to help Ofelia save face while toeing the line.

Meanwhile, Jackie's own relationship with her sister, Antoinette (Toni), is on the rocks. The two have been distant for some time, and we learn that their father was abusive to the girls when they were young. Jackie and Toni have been estranged after a brawl with their father led to Toni's hospitalization, and things have been strained between the two ever since. When Toni calls Jackie out of the blue and reveals that their father has died, Jackie is forced to confront her past. We see glimpses of Jackie's past and how their father's behavior shaped her as a woman, but she remains tenacious in dealing with the fallout.

Elsewhere in the hospital, Jackie's friend and fellow nurse, Thor, tries to come to terms with his feelings towards a patient he's been caring for, a beautiful young woman named Molina. Molina's boyfriend is a drug dealer who threatened Thor, and Molina herself threatened to tell Thor's bosses that he'd given her morphine. Thor is faced with the decision to do what's right or to protect the innocent victim. In true Jackie fashion, she steps in to offer support to Thor, reminding him that the only way to make things right is to come clean.

The episode ends with Jackie and her sister finally facing their familial demons and reconciling over drinks in the hospital bar. Though the financial scandal still looms, Jackie has made progress in sorting things out. Meanwhile, Zoey has helped make a tough call in Ofelia's best interests, and Thor has taken a stand against drugs. It's a heartwarming finale that finds these characters coming together and supporting one another in the midst of uncertainty.
