The charming city of Skagway lies in Southeast Alaska, just a tad bit north of Juneau, facing the icy waters of the Lynn Canal, and is known for its tremendous gold rush history, stunning scenery, and packed wildlife.
Our host, Jeff Corwin, takes us on a phenomenal adventure into this one-of-a-kind destination, where he learns about the rich historical past that shaped the area, enjoys the beautiful environment that surrounds it, and gets a fascinating insight into the life of the ecosystem's inhabitants.
Starting with a walk through the National Historic Park, Jeff explores the city's gold rush architecture, witnessing elaborate storefronts that once housed dance halls and saloons, and visiting the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad Depot Museum, where he learns about the challenges of mining and how it positively impacted the place's design and architecture.
Jeff embarks on his next adventure with Captain John, where they cruise the turquoise waters of the Lynn Canal to a secluded cove, where they stumble upon a sea lion colony. Jeff is in awe as he watches the sea lions bask in the sun on a rocky island, all while playfully splashing in and out of the water.
In the next phase of his adventure, Jeff heads to the Skagway Coast Guard Station, where he sets off with rescue divers to investigate the mysteries of the underwater world. He learns about some of the abandoned shipwrecks, and the treasure sent to the depths of the ocean, giving a brief lesson on how these wrecks provide essential habitats for marine eco-systems.
Later in the day, Jeff meets up with Gold Rush Sled Dogs’ owners for an exciting dog mushing adventure. Sled dogs are an essential part of Alaska's history and are commonly used as a transportation method during winter months. Jeff shows us how he bonds with the furry animals, learns how dogs are trained, and then takes a thrill ride, driving the playful pups through Skagway's snow-covered terrain.
As the day comes to a close, Jeff hikes to Lower Dewey Lake, where he treks through the stunning Alaskan wilderness, taking in the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. Jeff then meets up with the Department of Fish and Game's bear management team, who demonstrates their efforts to keep the bears away from human populations and the science behind tracking and identifying the animal population.
