In season 1 episode 7 of Ocean Treks with Jeff Corwin, entitled "Dominican Republic: Digging for Destiny," Jeff Corwin sets out on an adventure to explore the breathtaking island nation of the Dominican Republic.

Jeff begins his journey in Santo Domingo, the capital city of the Dominican Republic, where he visits the historic Alcazar de Colón, a 16th-century palace that was once the home of Christopher Columbus' son. Jeff learns about the country's rich history and culture before heading to his next destination.

Next, Jeff travels to the outskirts of Santo Domingo to explore Los Tres Ojos, a mesmerizing subterranean cavern home to three lagoons, surrounded by lush vegetation and impressive rock formations.

Afterwards, Jeff drives north to the rolling hills of La Hacienda, where he meets with a group of local artisans, who teach him about the country's intricate amber trade. Amber is a highly valued gemstone in the Dominican Republic and is often referred to as "the Dominican diamond." The artisans take Jeff to show him firsthand how they extract the precious stone from the mountains and craft it into beautiful jewelry and decorative objects.

The following day, Jeff heads to Santo Cerro, one of the country's most important religious sites. Santo Cerro is a hill where, according to legend, the Virgin Mary appeared to a Taino Indian in the 16th century, leading to the conversion of the entire island to Christianity.

From there, Jeff travels to Jarabacoa, a mountain town that's famous for its breathtaking scenery and adventurous outdoor activities. Jeff meets with one of the locals, who takes him horseback riding through the hills and valleys of the surrounding countryside, giving him a unique perspective on the natural beauty of the Dominican Republic.

Later that day, Jeff meets with a group of scientists who are working to protect the country's diverse wildlife. Jeff learns about the research being done on the Hispaniolan solenodon, a rare and endangered insectivore, and even gets to hold one in his hands.

Finally, Jeff heads to the town of Constanza, where he meets with a group of farmers who are working to preserve the country's agricultural heritage. Jeff learns about the unique crops that are grown in the area, including strawberries and cabbage, and even helps to harvest some of the vegetables himself.

Throughout the episode, Jeff is struck by the warmth and generosity of the Dominican people, as well as the country's stunning landscapes and rich history. His journey gives viewers a deeper appreciation for this vibrant, beautiful country and the many treasures it has to offer.
