Orangutan Island Season 1 Episode 13 Who Rules?

  • February 8, 2008

Orangutan Island is a docu-series that focuses on the rehabilitation and conservation efforts of a group of orphaned orangutans in Borneo, Indonesia. Season 1, episode 13 titled "Who Rules?" follows the orangutans as they continue to grow and learn how to survive in the wild.

In this episode, we see a power struggle emerge between two dominant males, Richie and Kasper. Richie, who has always been considered the alpha male, begins to feel threatened by Kasper's growing strength and confidence. The tension between the two males reaches a boiling point when they both come face to face with a female orangutan in heat.

Meanwhile, the younger orangutans are learning important skills from their mothers and caregivers. Baby Obi is shown how to use bark to make a comfortable nest in the trees, while Mona tries her hand at building a makeshift bridge to cross a small stream.

One of the main goals of the rehabilitation program is to teach the orangutans how to forage for food in the wild. The team sets up a feeding station at the edge of the forest, where the orangutans can learn to climb trees and search for fruit on their own.

As the episode progresses, we see the different personalities of each orangutan begin to emerge. Tutti and Santi, two of the youngest females, are shown playing together and enjoying a day of exploration. The older males, such as Tiger and Vito, are more solitary and spend much of their time high up in the trees.

The orangutans face many challenges in the wild, including predators such as snakes and birds of prey. The caregivers are always on the lookout for any potential danger and ensure that the orangutans are safe and well-fed.

One of the key themes of the episode is the importance of social structures within the orangutan community. While the males may compete for dominance, the females work together to care for their young. We see examples of this throughout the episode, as the mothers teach their babies how to climb, swing, and find food.

Overall, "Who Rules?" is a fascinating look at the daily lives of these incredible primates and the dedicated team of caregivers who work tirelessly to give them a second chance at life in the wild. The power struggle between Richie and Kasper creates a sense of tension and drama, while the younger orangutans provide moments of joy and wonder. This episode is a must-watch for anyone interested in conservation and animal behavior.
