Ross Poldark continues to struggle with the aftermath of his return from the American War of Independence in episode two of Poldark season one. The episode begins with Ross gathering a group of miners to help him reopen his family's mine in hopes of restoring their financial stability. However, he soon finds that the price of copper has dropped significantly and their profits will not be enough to support his land and homes.

Meanwhile, Ross' former love interest, Elizabeth, is engaged to his cousin, Francis. The engagement proves to be a sore spot for both Ross and Francis, who is jealous of Ross' relationship with Elizabeth. This tension is amplified when Francis sees Elizabeth and Ross talking at the market, leading to a heated argument between the cousins.

Ross' new maid, Demelza, is also introduced in this episode. She is rough around the edges and is initially met with resistance from the other servants. However, Ross takes a liking to her and offers her a job. The two quickly develop a close bond, much to the disapproval of Ross' aunt, who sees Demelza as beneath their social standing.

As the episode progresses, Ross becomes increasingly aware of the poverty and suffering of the miners in his community. He is moved to action after witnessing a group of children stealing food and is inspired to create a school for the poor children in his area. The idea is met with resistance from the wealthy members of the community, who see it as a disruptive and unnecessary undertaking. However, Ross is determined to make a positive impact in his community and perseveres in his efforts to create the school.

The episode reaches a climactic point when Ross' mine collapses, trapping several miners inside. He risks his own life to save the trapped men and is assisted by his loyal friend, Jim Carter. Despite their heroic efforts, several miners are killed in the accident, leaving Ross devastated and questioning the worth of all his efforts.

Throughout the episode, the themes of class, loyalty, and social justice are explored. Ross' struggle to balance his social position and his desire to help those around him is a compelling aspect of his character. His relationships with Francis and Elizabeth are also complex and add layers of tension to the story. The introduction of Demelza adds an additional interesting dynamic and it will be exciting to see how her character develops throughout the rest of the season.

Overall, episode two of Poldark season one is a well-crafted continuation of the story and sets up several compelling storylines for the rest of the season. The themes of class and social justice are particularly relevant in today's society and add an important layer of depth and meaning to the show. Fans of historical dramas will surely enjoy the captivating characters and engaging storyline of this episode.
