In Project Runway season 11 episode 4, titled "The Ultimate Hard and Soft," the designers are challenged to create a look that incorporates both hard and soft elements. Inspired by Heidi Klum's "tough as nails" image and the softness of her butterfly tattoo, the contestants must find a way to balance two very different design elements into their garments.
To start the challenge, the designers are taken to a quarry where they gather materials such as stones, metal, and concrete. They are then given $300 to shop for more soft materials such as silk, lace, and chiffon. With only one day to complete their look, the pressure is on as the designers must carefully balance the hard and soft elements without creating a disjointed or unappealing garment.
As the designers work on their garments, mentor Tim Gunn visits each one to offer guidance and advice. He expresses concern over some designs, while he praises others for their creativity and thoughtfulness.
The runway show is full of surprises as the contestants reveal their unique take on the challenge. One designer creates a stunning gown made entirely out of metal chains, while another incorporates delicate lace into a tough-looking biker jacket. The judges, Heidi Klum, Nina Garcia, and Zac Posen, praise some designs as true works of art, while criticizing others for their lack of cohesion.
Ultimately, one designer is crowned the winner while another is sent home in tears. The competition is getting tougher with each episode, and the remaining designers know they must continue to push themselves to stand out from the crowd.
